Epicurious Names Blue Plate the ‘Best Mayonnaise You Can Buy at the Grocery Store’
WHAT: Epicurious has named Blue Plate the “best mayonnaise you can buy at the grocery store” in a blind taste test. The magazine tasted 16 brands of mayonnaise — both organic and classic — to determine the best one. Other brands competing against Blue Plate include Hellmann’s (which received second place), Duke’s, Sir Kensington’s and Miracle Whip. To determine the best grocery store mayonnaise, Epicurious selected the country’s widely available, top-selling brands. The panel only chose traditional mayo, nothing light, vegan or flavored. Finally, testers stated they wanted a mayo with a “great balance of flavor … both rich and tart” with a creamy texture.

WHY: Epicurious named Blue Plate the best commercially made mayo for its “bright, lemony flavor” and “perfect creamy texture.” Because Blue Plate is made exclusively with egg yolks, it has a “more satisfying, homemade flavor,” Epicurious author Joe Sevier writes.
HOW: All mayonnaise samples were tasted by a panel of Epicurious editors in a blind tasting. Voters tasted the samples with spoons, then with cherry tomatoes, sliced cucumbers and sugar snap peas to determine how the condiment paired with food.
